Winemaker Notes
This Vermentino del Sulcis is one of a kind and truly surprising. It is produced using ancient techniques bringing together the historic Sardinian history of making Vernaccia and the Spanish Sherry production methods.
"Flor" is a term used in winemaking to describe a layer of yeast that forms on the surface of wine as it ages in barrels. This unique phenomenon is primarily associated with the production of certain styles of sherry in Spain, particularly Fino and Manzanilla sherries, but it can also occur in other winemaking regions and styles.
Food & Wine Pairing
Structured white wine that pairs perfectly with a big variety of dishes, like roasted pork, rabbit and other white meats, but also seafood based structured dishes.
More Information
The Giba winery was established with the goal of creating wines that maintain a strong connection to their territory, capturing the unique features and potential of Sulcis. The "Cantina Giba" brand aims to convey its terroir through the quality of its wines, which is why single variety vinification is employed for both Carignano and Vermentino. The vines, located in Calasetta, Sant’Antioco, Masainas, Nuxis, Giba, and Porto Pino, were selected for their suitability to this type of cultivation. Cantina Giba is one of the few European vineyards using ungrafted vines. In the early 1900s, phylloxera, a tiny spider that eats the roots and kills the vine, destroyed most of Europe's vineyards. As a result, 90% of vineyards were replanted with American rootstocks.
