Winemaker Notes
The 2016 vintage was certainly one of the longest-lasting in recent years. Signs of the extended vegetative cycle first appeared at the beginning of the season, when mild temperatures and low rainfall in January and early February confirmed the trend seen during the first part of winter. However, from the end of February through March, temperatures dropped, and there was plenty of rain, providing the soil with good water reserves, although less than the previous year. The “late” cold led to a delay in the restarting of the vegetative cycle, which can be estimated at around ten days for all varietals compared to the previous year. Spring began with considerable rainfall, though it did not cause any plant disease damage given the stage of the vegetative cycle, with average temperatures not being high, mainly due to low overnight minimums. This phenological delay continued until the end of summer, which also began slowly but extended until the end of September. All the grapes were healthy. The quality of the 2016 wines is marked by excellent balance, a big bouquet, and great structure. It is a vintage featuring significant qualities that will be talked about for a long time to come.
